Sometimes I am told by someone that they don’t need a doula because they are planning a medical birth. I find that expectant parents who think this way probably don’t have accurate information about what a doula does. There is still this view of doulas that we burn insence and beat drums at a birth-this is USUALLY not the case-lol
Here are some things to think about when it comes to the support doulas provide, even in a medical delivery.
Doulas provide information. Information is one of the keys to lowering anxiety during the birth experience no matter what kind of birth you are planning. Doctors and nurses will give you enough information to tell you what is happening but not always enough to help you feel comfortable with the situation.
Doulas provide support for partners. If a labouring mom is in discomfort but it is not time for the epidural or the epidural is not working properly, it can be very stressful for partners. Giving the partner suggestions on how to help ease discomfort is very rewarding and minimizes the feeling of helplessness.
Doulas provide reassurances while you are still in early labour. This tends to be a time when expectant families have a lot of questions. The unfortunate part is that this is usually when you are still at home or have been sent back home and don’t have the support of the medical staff to reassure you. Doulas are available 24/7 to answer those questions and can even spend time with you at home as well.
Doulas help you stay comfortable before, during and after an epidural. There are times you may feel ready for an epidural but maybe you are still in early labour. Maybe you’ve asked for it but have to wait for the anesthesiologist. Maybe you still have some discomfort even after the epidural. There are may different scenarios where having an experience support coach is extremely helpful.
Doulas help you navigate through the medical environment. God forbid any complications arise, the doula is there to make sure you know what your options are and that you understand everything that is happening. This is one of the main reasons why families with doulas tend to have a more satisfying birth experience and a positive memory.
