Nighttime Newborn Care Services

It is completely expected to be waking up every 2-3 hours throughout the night with a newborn, which is not a walk in the park for any tired new parent. Lack of sleep can make it harder to function during the day, and sleep deprivation makes regulating mood more challenging the longer it continues. So why not invest in nighttime support to get more sleep? Being able to sleep longer, have an extra set of trained hands to walk you through nighttime parenting, and assistance with newborn care are all things that can make a tremendous difference.

You may have heard of a night nanny, night nurse or baby nurse, but likely are not aware that there is no accredited training organization for any of these terms. It is rare that anyone offering these services are under a designation of Registered Nurse like the name assumes. Instead these are people that have some experience babysitting infants, and take over the newborn care as you are sleeping.

What you really need is a postpartum doula from a professional company like Helping Hands Doula. Every Doula has completed their training components and is an active member in good standing with The Association of Ontario Doulas. That means that your support knows best practices with newborn sleep, infant feeding, and normal behaviour to start you on the best foot forward with parenting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Postpartum Doula Support

How is a postpartum doula different than a night nanny or night nurse?

One of the key distinctions between a Night Nurse and a Postpartum Doula is the focus of care. A Night Nurse centers their attention primarily on the baby, while a Postpartum Doula supports the entire family. Our role extends beyond providing care during our time with you. We guide, educate, and empower you with techniques and tools that you can confidently use long after your Doula’s shift ends. Think of us as on-the-job trainers for your journey into parenthood. Our goal is to nurture your confidence and skills to the point where our work is complete and you feel fully prepared.

Another important difference is training. Postpartum Doulas are professionally educated in best practices for sleep, newborn care, infant feeding, and developmental milestones. Choosing a Doula means choosing the reassurance of a certified professional who is held to the highest standards of care and accountability. In contrast, Night Nannies or Night Nurses often have no formal accreditation or governing body to oversee their work, which can present unnecessary risks during such a critical time.

How does the doula support me overnight if I am breastfeeding?

Your overnight Doula provides expert, nurturing care through the night to ensure you receive meaningful rest. She will remain in the same area as your baby, tending to their needs with calm confidence. When your baby wakes, she will gently bring them to you for feeding, support you with positioning and any feeding questions, and make sure you have water and a light snack. Afterward, your Doula will handle burping, diapering, and soothing your baby back to sleep so you can return to bed and enjoy uninterrupted, restorative rest between feeds.

What if I plan to bottle feed?

We honour and support every feeding journey, tailoring our care to your goals and preferences.

For families choosing formula, your Doula provides expert guidance and hands-on support with every detail. From preparing bottles and feeding your baby with care, to cleaning and sterilizing all equipment. She can also help you select the most suitable formula and bottles for your baby’s unique needs, while teaching you how to confidently manage each step.

For families feeding breast milk, your Doula can help you establish an effective pumping routine, share practical strategies to support and increase your milk supply, and take care of overnight feedings along with all associated preparation and cleanup, allowing you to rest and recover while your baby is lovingly cared for.

How does the doula know what to do to help me?

One of the greatest benefits of working with our team is that you never have to wonder what your Doula will do. With years of professional experience, our Doulas are experts in anticipating your needs and offering proactive, intuitive care. Each shift begins with a brief check-in to understand what’s most important that day, and from there, your Doula will create a plan that evolves as your baby grows and your needs change.

Every family’s journey is unique, which is why we include a personalized postpartum planning session before care begins. This conversation allows us to understand your family’s rhythms, identify areas where you’ll benefit most from support, and design a schedule that feels both intentional and easeful from the very start.

How is doula support different than family and friends?

Family and friends can be a wonderful source of love and support after your baby arrives. However, their guidance often comes from personal experience, which can sometimes feel overwhelming or conflicting. Your Doula offers something different: calm, professional, and unbiased support designed to help you discover what works best for your unique family.

Many of our clients share that having a Doula not only helped them feel more confident in their own choices but also improved communication with their loved ones. With your Doula’s guidance, family support becomes more harmonious, allowing everyone to work together in ways that truly nurture you and your baby.

What are the minimum hours we need to use for a shift?

Overnight shifts are a minimum of 8 hours, typically running from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Many families choose longer shifts for added rest and flexibility. Since there are no maximum limits, we can tailor the timing to fit your family’s unique routine and needs.

How do I schedule my hours?

Scheduling your hours with our team is simple and seamless. Support can be prescheduled or adjusted as your needs evolve, depending on your preferred support pathway. Your personalized plan is designed around what works best for your family, while your dedicated Care Coordinator handles all the details to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Testimonial

Marissa
This company saved us with their overnight doula service. They were able to provide us with support at the last minute when I needed help caring for our baby at night. Our doula was so loving and competent with our newborn, and supportive and caring of me. She instantly made me feel comfortable and I was able to get some of the recovery time I needed in those first couple weeks postpartum. I would highly recommend the doula services to anyone needing that extra support. It is worth every penny!
